چکیده
SCHMUTZ P., TARJAN J., GÜNTHARDT-GOERG M. S., MATYSSEK R. & BÜCHER J. B. 1995. Nitrogen dioxide a gaseous fertilizer of poplar trees. Phyton (Horn, Austria) 35 (2): 219-232, 4 figures. English with German summary. Cuttings of a poplar clone (Populus x euramericana 'Dorskamp') were exposed to filtered air and to filtered air with 80 to 135 nl I" NO2 added in climate chambers during 12 weeks. Three different levels of nitrogen fertilization were used, the lowest causing symptoms of nitrogen deficiency. NO2 fumigation caused no visible injury to the plants. Fumigated plants showed elevated activity of nitrate reductase and higher leaf nitrogen concentrations relative to the control, indicating nitrogen assimilation from NO2. Fumigation enlarged the foliar area and, at the lowest nitrogen supply from the substrate, elevated the net CO2 assimilation rate. At the highest level of soil nitrogen supply, fumigation enlarged the width of xylem and bark tissue in the main stem. Fumigation had a stimulating effect on total biomass production during the exposure period. Thus, NO2 acted as a nitrogen fertilizer, regardless of the nitrogen supply from the substrate. The results are discussed with regard to hypotheses concerning the impact of nitrogen oxides on forest ecosystems.

Nitrogen fixation in microbial biotechnology
This review provides a good overview of biological nitrogen fixation in the growth of leguminous plants, particularly relating to fertilizer needs for crops. In addition to plants that form nodules that host nitrogen-fixing bacteria, other bacteria form different associations with plants, and this is currently under intense study to determine if there is significant nitrogen transfer to the pla...

This research was conducted to measure quantitative and qualitative characteristics of trees and to determine amount of annual increment for poplar and plane, specially their volume and wood production beside Zayanderud dam. Two plantation areas with 3×3 meters spacing were selected for sampling after field survey. A 30-years-old poplar and a 30-years-old plane stand. In each stand, five tree l...
متن کاملGrowth and nutritional response of hardwood seedlings to controlled-release fertilization at outplanting
Hardwood bareroot seedlings typically undergo transplant shock immediately following afforestation planting associated with moisture or nutrient stress. Broadcast field fertilization at outplanting with readily available nutrients has shown limited capacity to reduce nutrient stresses. Furthermore, the rapid nutrient release characteristic of broadcast fertilization leads to high levels of nutr...
متن کاملCarbon dioxide level and form of soil nitrogen regulate assimilation of atmospheric ammonia in young trees
The influence of carbon dioxide (CO2) and soil fertility on the physiological performance of plants has been extensively studied, but their combined effect is notoriously difficult to predict. Using Coffea arabica as a model tree species, we observed an additive effect on growth, by which aboveground productivity was highest under elevated CO2 and ammonium fertilization, while nitrate fertiliza...
متن کاملThinning Intensity Affects Soil-Atmosphere Fluxes of Greenhouse Gases and Soil Nitrogen Mineralization in a Lowland Poplar Plantation
Thinning is one of the intensive forest management techniques commonly applied to increase the merchantable timber volume. However, how thinning affects soil–atmospheric fluxes of greenhouse gases (GHGs) is poorly understood. A field experiment with four treatments (CK: unthinned; MB: medium intensity thinning from below; HB: high intensity thinning from below; and HI: high intensity thinning b...
